Despite widespread use, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a topic of much debate, often receiving criticism from academic and professional sectors. In "The Clinial Effectiveness of Neuro-Linguistic Programming", international academics, researchers, and therapists are brought together to examine the current evidence of the clinical efficacy of NLP techniques, considering how NLP can be effective in facilitating change, enrichment and symptom relief.

Dr. Frank Bourke and his colleagues provide a critical appraisal of evidence-based research in the area to indicate the benefits of the approach and identify the need for an increase in randomized well-controlled clinical trials.

Contributors also explore how NLP has been used to treat various disorders including, post-traumatic stress, phobias, addictions, anxiety disorders and mild depression.

Papers and research that question the use of NLP in education

Only papers from the 1980’s contain formal research evidence that is critical.  Furthermore, the methodologies used in these have been criticised - in most cases because of inaccurate application/interpretation of NLP techniques (See Carey et al., 2009). So far, no critical papers (since the 1980’s) contain research evidencebased criticism that is the result of actual NLP research studies.
